Written to be read alone by a confident reader, or out loud together at the end of the day.
Friendship, courage, curiosity, and helping people. Hugh solves problems with patience and cleverness, never with force.
The story opens with the death of Hugh's grandfather. It happens quietly and off the page. There is sadness, but nothing frightening, and the book moves toward hope from the first chapter.
There are no fights, no weapons and no villains. The obstacles are broken machines, bad weather, rules, and misunderstandings between friends.
Hugh makes real mistakes and has to put them right. That is deliberate. So is the fact that he says “I don't know” out loud.
