Adventures of Hugh
One morning, a small robot named Hugh wakes up to an unusual silence. His grandfather — the kind inventor who built him, taught him to repair things, and showed him what kindness really means — is gone.
Carrying a small backpack, a handful of tools and one brass screw to remember him by, Hugh sets off from Maple Creek toward the great city of Lumina to find new friends.
Along the way he discovers that courage does not mean being fearless. It means taking the next step even when you are afraid.

At the edge of a small town there stood an old house with a workshop attached to it. It was not big, and it was certainly not modern. One roof shingle had been crooked for so long that the birds had gotten used to it and built their nests beside it.
But inside it was always warm and bright, and there was always the quiet humming of tools.
That was where a little robot named Hugh lived with his grandpa — an old robot repairman.
Grandpa had built Hugh himself, a long time ago. He had taught him how to read, how to think, how to help people, and how to never give up, even when something went wrong.
“Never give up,” he liked to say, pushing his glasses up onto his forehead. “And if you absolutely have to give up, at least give up slowly. Nine times out of ten the thing fixes itself while you're busy quitting.”
The chapter continues in the book.
